Hidden views from Marinelli refuge
There are destinations, for which people are willing to sweat blood, walking for hours. At the end of the path, the astonishing view will be certainly worth the fatigue.
But there are also spiteful destinations whose tracks often start in the sun and constantly end by bad weather. Marinelli refuge, situated in the Carnian Alps, Italy, is one of those beautiful but spiteful places offering a splendid view on endless chains of mountains, unless clouds do not decide to spoil the beautiful landscape just some minutes before your arrival.
So, it may happen that the first and only time the splendid view was there in the sun, ready to be captured by the camera, smartphones had not been invented yet. Unware of the natural beauty waiting at the end of the tiring walk, you might have had no camera at all, or in more recent times, you did have a smartphone, but it was dead.
Then, you may try again and stubbornly climb to the refuge several times, but in vain, no matter if provided with a brand new camera or a perfectly working smartphone. It may happen that four times out of four, clouds appear just a few steps before you reach the longed for destination.
Cold and sweaty, you only have to eat your sandwiches in a rush and take shelter inside Marinelli hut, looking at the foggy clouds covering everything outside.
Once you have descended to the valley floor where you parked your car and maybe a thunderstorm has accompanied you all the track back long, you may decide not to give up and stubbornly plain another excursion to Marinelli refuge, who knows when and with what outcome.
Perhaps, it’s only a matter of unfavorable air flows, but they should put a sign at Marinelli refuge, which says, “You didn’t win. Better luck next time”.
