Crater Lake, luogo sacro dei Klamath

Quando si pensa ad un viaggio negli Stati Uniti, l’Oregon non viene considerato solitamente come la meta principale,  messo un po’ in secondo piano da nomi più altisonanti, come il Texas, la California e altri stati più gettonati. Nonostante ciò, l’Oregon ha tutte le carte in regola per costituire un’interessante scoperta del continente nordamericano. Un ambiente incontaminato, contraddistinto da montagne spettacolari, come le Cascade Mountains e laghi incantevoli, uno dei quali è Crater Lake, il lago più profondo degli Stati Uniti.

Un grande lago dalle acque così pure e profonde che le montagne riflesse confondono il limite esatto di ciò che si trova sotto e sopra il livello dell’acqua. Crater Lake è un mondo a sé e le sue acque non le porta nessun fiume. Solo la neve e la pioggia lo nutrono da ben 7.000 anni, da quando improvvisamente il monte Mazama esplose, collassando su se stesso e riducendo la sua altezza di circa 900 mt, spargendo le ceneri fino a 65 km di distanza.

Il popolo indiano dei Klamath che allora risiedeva in quel territorio sopravvisse miracolosamente alla catastrofe, tramandandola ai posteri come il risultato della lotta tra Skell, il dio del mondo di sopra e quello del mondo di sotto. Llao.

Crater Lake divenne così luogo sacro e di inestimabile valore spirituale, ispiratore di visioni e prove di coraggio da parte dei Klamath. Chi riusciva a correre giù verso il lago senza cadere, dopo aver scalato la pericolosa parete della caldera, mostrava di possedere speciali poteri spirituali. Intorno a Crater Lake si estende oggi l’omonimo parco nazionale, l’unico dell’Oregon, che con oltre 145 km di sentieri offre l’occasione di assaporare appieno l’incanto e la solitudine di un luogo mistico, oltre che ricco di bellezza naturalistica. Le condizioni atmosferiche influenzano enormemente la possibilità di respirarne l’incanto.

Così come nella bella stagione, le profonde acque blu riflettono lucenti il contorno montuoso e il cielo limpido mentre la temperatura è piacevolmente calda, accade che anche in agosto la nebbia e le nuvole si impossessino di Crater Lake. La neve che cade copiosa sin da Ottobre stenta a sciogliersi fino a Giugno in alcune zone.  Tuttavia, il giro di oltre 30 km intorno al lago oppure  in battello sulle acque profonde  594 mt, che si estendono per 53 kmq, e numerosi percorsi di trecking in estate, lo sci di fondo e le escursioni con le ciaspole guidati da un ranger in inverno sono incluse tra le più allettanti attrattive terrene di un viaggio in Oregon.

Crater Lake: Klamaths’ sacred site

The idea of traveling to the US usually does not linger on Oregon as a main destination. Compared to other states much more mentioned such as Texas and California, it seems to be wrongly overlooked in touristic tours.

Despite that, Oregon has all it takes to be a surprising discovery of the North American continent just like other states have. Its uncontaminated nature is marked by spectacular mountains such as the Cascade Mountains and beautiful lakes, one of which is the deepest in the US.

Crater Lake’s deep waters are so clear and blue that the reflecting mountains seem to confuse the definite line between what is above and below the water surface. Crater Lake is a world of its own and no river brings waters to it.  Only the rain and snow have fed it for 7,000 years, since Mount Mazama suddenly exploded and collapsed, reducing  its height of about 900 m, spreading  out pyroclastic material as far as 65 km.

Klamaths, the native people who were settled in the territory miraculously saved from the terrible event and left their witness for future generations. For Klamath people Mount  Mazema explosion was the final outcome of a struggle between Skell, the God of the World Above and Llao, the Underworld’s God. So Crater Lake became a sacred site, inspiring visions and brave rituals. Reaching the lake running down from the deep caldera wall without falling was a proof to possess  superior spirit powers.

Nowadays, a National Park, the only one in Oregon, extends around Crater Lake. With a 150 km trails net the opportunity of getting immersed in the solitude and spell of a site full of  both spiritual and natural beauty is not to be missed. Weather conditions may greatly influence such a deep immersion into nature and mysticism, of course.

Just like the deep blue waters clearly reflect the mountains  and the bright sky in warm weather, it may happen that even in August Crater Lake would grow hazy in the fog and clouds. Snow heavily falling from October hardly melts in June in some areas. Anyway, summer is the right time to make a tour around the 53 km long rim or on boat above the blue waters that can be 564 m deep or by foot along the numerous paths. In winter, trails and closed roads become ideal tracks for  cross-country skiing and  snowshoes are the necessary equipment to take part in a ranger’s guided excursion.
