On the way to Provence: The Stura Valley
As a natural passageway between Italy and France the Stura Valley extends for 60 km along the homonymous river, marking the borders with the Maritime Alps southwards and the Cottian Alps northwards. Different sceneries follow one another along the way, alternating green areas such as the thick forests of fir and larch close to the Maddalena Pass and rocky views like the Barricate cliffs.
A strategic point of the Stura Valley from the mists of time is the Maddalena Pass or Col de Larche as the French neighbours call it. Wayfarers, merchants and soldiers used to follow the natural corridor of the Stura Valley in the past coming and going between Provence and the present region of Piedmont.
Nowadays those who wish to know the natural surroundings across the valley can go on foot or ride a MTB along a wide net of mule tracks, military roads and trails of different difficulty levels for all kinds of hikers. For example, by a six-hour walk that can be divided into two parts with a stop at the Refuge Zanotti it is possible to reach the top of Mt. Tenibres (3031 m), the highest mountain of the Stura Valley and be gratified with the beautiful view. Shorter and easiest excursions include the ring track of the St.Anna Lakes reaching the Big Lake and the Lausfer Lakes in French territory. The track starts and finishes at the Sanctuary of St. Anna situated at 2010 mt , the highest sanctuary in Europe.
A historic view is given in the middle of the Stura Valley by the Fortress of Vinadio, which was built in the first half of the 19th century during the reign of King Carlo Alberto of Savoy to defend a territory that owing to its geographical position was constantly under the threat of foreign attacks since the time of the Barbaric invasions and the Saracen raids. Vinadio is also a famous resort thanks to its sulphureous thermal bath representing the wellness centre of a valley to be discovered in many other aspects.
As for the cultural background of the Stura Valley, the Ecomuseum of sheep farming at Pontebernardo celebrates the sambucana sheep, a typical local breed of sheep which is the symbol of the valley. As a heritage of “Occitania”, the name used to define a region including Provençe just behind the Italian border, Provençal influences can be found not only in gastronomy, for example by the superb use of herbs in cooking but also in traditions and language. They mingle and coexist with Piedmontese elements confirming once again the role of the Stura Valley as a place of exchange between the culture and traditions of the neighbouring territories.
