Tra gli uffici postali più strani del mondo, rientra senza dubbio lo sportello subacqueo di Vanuatu, nazione del Sud Pacifico. Il piccolo ufficio postale è un must per chi visita la piccola isola di Hydeaway vicina a Port Vila, purchè sappia nuotare. Dalla sua postazione, a soli 3 metri di profondità e 50 mt dalla spiaggia, è possibile inviare cartoline postali plastificate, munite di speciali timbri a secco.

Non si tratta ovviamente di un ufficio postale normale, con orari regolari e lunghe code, in ogni caso si può trovare all’interno del piccolo chiosco subacqueo di Vanuatu un impiegato dotato di bombole per un’ora al giorno o per intervalli più lunghi quando ve ne sia la richiesta, ad esempio nei giorni in cui giungono le navi da crociera. Sulla spiaggia sono indicati gli orari di apertura e una bandiera con galleggiante indica che all’interno del piccolo sportello è presente l’impiegato subacqueo. I non-nuotatori possono affidare le cartoline postali ad un assistente che si fufferà in acqua per loro e provvederà alla spedizione. Per chi non vuole o non può mettersi in viaggio per raggiungere questa strana meta esiste anche la possibilità di farsi recapitare a casa una cartolina subacquea ordinandola su internet, un’idea per un piccolo regalo a qualcuno che sicuramente ne resterà piacevolmente sorpreso. Lo strano ufficio postale è stato inaugurato nel 2003 e per celebrarlo lo stato di Vanuatu, arcipelago formato da ben 83 isole,  ha emesso diversi francobolli, in questo caso cartacei che hanno fatto il giro del mondo.

Lo sportello postale tra pesci variopinti e coralli multicolori non è la sola stranezza di Vanuatu in fatto di posta perché, volendo, si può imbucare la propria missiva in un ambiente completamente diverso, ma altrettanto inusuale. Si tratta  della “cassetta postale vulcanica” proprio accanto al cratere del vulcano ancora attivo Yasur sull’isola di Tanna. Sarà perchè Vanuatu nel 2007 è stata dichiarata la nazione più felice del mondo, trovando nella sua spensieratezza lo spunto per mettere di buon umore i turisti ed inventarsi strane modalità per un gesto tipico di chi si trova lontano molte miglia da casa. In ogni caso il recapito delle cartoline subacquee  è assicurato, anche se con i tempi dovuti alla distanza e per Vanuatu il loro arrivo a destinazione non può che dare soddisfazione, dimostrandone l’efficienza e l’originalità.

Strange mail from Vanuatu

The under water post office of Vanuati in the South Pacific  is no doubt one of the stangest in the world. It’s a must when visiting Hydeaway Island near Port Vila except for non-swimmers. From its location only at 3 m below the surface and 50 m offshore it is possible to send waterproof plastic postcards with embossed stamps. At the unusual counter there is usually a scuba clerk for about sixty minutes every day, but opening hours may very according to demand, for example when a cruise ship is nearby. Anyway, opening hours are indicated on the beach and a floating flag shows that the underwater staff is on. Non-swimmers can give their postcards to an assistant who will dive for them into the water.

In order to meet the requests of remote addressees who do not want or are unable to travel so far to get such a peculiar mail service, underwater postcards may be ordered online. This could be a good idea for a little gift to someone who will certainly be pleased to receive it. The underwater post office was inaugurated in 2003 and a number of stamps dedicated to the event have been issued by Vanuatu Post since then. Anyway, the underwater world inhabited by tropical fish and multi-coloured corals is not the only strange place for sending postcards from Vanuatu.

In a completely different location next to the still active Yasur Volcano crater on Tanna Island  there is another special post box from which volcanic mail can be sent to the rest of the world. In 2007 Vanuatu was declared the happiest country in the world and its joviality may be the reason of funny ideas such as underwater and volcanic post service to please tourists and people living thousand miles away. In any case, every time an underwater postcard arrives at destination Vanuatu Post can be proud to have fulfilled its unique mission efficiently.

Ausserordentliche Post aus Vanuatu

Der Unterwasser-Postamt in Vanuatu, eine Inselgruppe aus 83 Inseln  im Südpazifik,  ist zweifellos unter den merkwürdigsten Post-Filialen der Welt. Der kleine Unterwasser-Schalter befindet sich bei 3 Meter Tiefe und 50 Meter vor der Küste Hydeawayinsel weg in der Nähe von Port Vila.  Wasserfeste Postkarten mit Trockenstempeln können von dort abgesendet werden und  gewöhnlich ist ein Tauchangestellte eine Stunde am Tag im Dienst.

Die Öffnüngszeiten können aber auf Wunsch ändern z.B. bei Ankunft eines Kreuzfahrtshiffes. Wenn der Postamt geöffnet ist, wird eine Schwimmflagge gestellt. Auf jeden Fall sind die Öffnüngszeiten am Strand angezeigt.  Nicht-Schwimmer können einem Postassistenten ihre Postkarten übergeben, der an ihrer Stelle  im Wasser untertauscht. Die fernen Empfänger, die so eine lange Reise nicht machen können aber Unterwasser-Postkarten erhalten möchten, können sie sie online bestellen. Das ist auch eine gute Idee für ein kleines Geschenk, darüber sich der Empfänger sicherlich freuen wird.

Der Unterwasser-Postamt wurde 2003 geöffnet und die Vanuatu Post gab zu diesem Anlass einige Briefmarken heraus, die in der ganzen Welt gesammelt werden. Der Unterwasser-Postamt ist doch nicht der einizige ausserordentliche Ort in Vanuatu, um Postkarten zu senden. Ein anderer sonstiger Briefkasten befindet sich  nähmlich am aktiven Krater des Yasur Vulkans auf der Insel Tanna. 2007 wurde Vanuatu als das glücklichste Nation der Welt ernannt und vielleicht erklärt ihre Heiterkeit die angenehme Idee der Undertwasser- und Vulkanpost. Jedesmal eine Unterwasser-Postkarte ans gewünschte Ziel ankommt, kann sich Vanuatu Post ebenso mit seinen originellen und  erfolgreichen Auftrag zufrieden erklären.
