Gli Eventi di Akita

Incorniciata dalle montagne sacre e ricca di sorgenti termali la regione di Akita-Ken nel nord del Giappone è l’ideale per chi ama il trekking e i bagni termali. Vanta  il lago più   profondo del Giappone, il Tazawa (mt.423), ma il   suo capoluogo Akita  racchiude altri primati. Le abitanti di questa città che conta circa 350.000 residenti sono infatti note per avere la pelle più bella di tutte le altre donne giapponesi.

Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita

Altro  elemento che  però distingue Akita da tutte  le altre città del  mondo è il  fatto di conservare presso il Museo d’Arte Masakichi Hirano il più grande dipinto su tela. Si tratta di un pannello lungo  20,5 mt e alto 3,65  mt realizzato  nel  1937 da Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita, artista giapponese  che soggiornò per  molti anni all’estero, recandosi in Francia,  in America Latina e negli  Stati Uniti, arrivando ad assumere il nome di Leonard in onore di Leonardo da Vinci.

Dedicatosi alla  realizzazione di  grandi  murales  e  incaricato da  Masakachi  Hirano, fautore  dell’omonimo Museo d’Arte  di  Akita,  Leonard  Tsuguharu Foujita  volle  rappresentare  gli  eventi  della  vita cittadina correlati alle quattro stagioni.

In  sequenza, a partire  da  sinistra, è rappresentato l’inverno dove si svolge la vita quotidiana. Un ponte prosegue nella parte  destra del dipinto in cui  sono raffigurati i festeggiamenti che hanno luogo nella città, tra cui il famoso Kanto Festival. Per questo motivo, l’opera è stata intitolata   Akita-no Gyoji  – Gli Eventi di Akita –  ed è classificato come il più grande dipinto su tela del mondo in epoca moderna.

 

Akita’s large canvas

Sacred mountains and hot springs make the area of Akita-Ken the ideal place for trekking and relaxing immersions. Within its territory Tazawa (423 m) is the deepest lake of Japan, but the main city Akita, where about 350,000 people live, has taken the lead in other aspects as well.

Local women are told to have the smoothest and glowingest skin compared to all other Japanese women. Another element makes Akita stand out among other cities. It has the largest canvas in the world, represented by a 20,5 m x 3,65 panel realized by the Japanese artist Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita in 1937.

He spent many years of his life travelling abroad to France, Latin America and the US, adding the name of Leonard to its real name in honour of Leonardo da Vinci. When in Japan again he was assigned by Masakichi Hirano, the promoter of the homonymous  Akita Arts Museum, to paint a large canvas which should represent city life.

Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita, who had already painted murals, decided to represent Akita with a huge oil painting divided into four sections according to the four seasons. Every section corresponds to a city event, beginning with winter on the left to describe everyday life with related symbols.

A bridge at the end of the first section seems to lead across the rest of the canvas to some celebrations, such as the famous Kanto Festival on the right side of the panel. That’s the reason why Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita entitled his large painting Akita-no Gyoji   – Akita’s events – and focused on the contrast between daily life and celebrations. Still nowadays the huge painting is classified as the largest canvas of the modern world.
