Custonaci, the town of marbles and caves
Custonaci lies in a landscape marked by a chromatic contrast, which makes it a suggestive town in the outermost western Sicily. Deep blue and emerald green are the colours of the crystalline sea, not far from Custonaci.
Anyway, the town’s history is more related to the earth and the ivory of the marble quarries, in particular of the “Perlato of Sicily”. In fact, Custonaci boasts an ancient extractive tradition, placing it as the first marble-producing town in Sicily and in the world’s second place after Carrara.
The Karst formations of the surrounding area originated a number of caves, the largest of which is the Cave of Mangiapane where people lived in the past and built some little houses with stalls . Today, the large cave is the location of the living crib which combines the religious meaning with the rural reality of the spot through living characters, dressed up as artisans, shepherds and farmers while doing their jobs.
The town of Custonaci is dominated by the impressive shape of Mount Cofano, whose grey rocks delicately shades into pink and the green areas of its natural reserve stand out against the reddish soil. During the August folk festivity dedicated to the Madonna, sparkling fireworks light up the dark sky. Custonaci is a striking corner in the province of Trapani, not far from the bathing areas of Cornino and the Gulf of Bonagia.
