Delightful seclusion on Prison Island in Zanzibar
The small Island of Zanzibar permeated with the scents of the enchanting mix of African and Arabian elements seems to bring back to the time when the Arab merchants started the flourishing spice trade. That’s the magic of Zanzibar, but on a small atoll not far off Stone Town another kind of magic inevitably enchants tourists.
Prison Island also called Changu Island can be reached by boat in only 30 minutes from Stone Town. In spite of its name, it may turn to be a very pleasant place to stay for one day or even one night. The beach around the small island is covered with white soft sand and the calm sea is a perfect spot for snorkeling thanks to the wonderful nearby coral reef and the clear turquoise waters.
The natural beauty of Prison Island is in contrast with its history, yet increasing its charm. It was first used by Arabian merchants to segregate slaves and in 1893 a prison was built though no prisoners were ever detained. Finally, it became a quarantine centre to avoid the spread of yellow fever.
Today the small island is a peculiar attraction on the northern coast of Tanzania that can be reached hiring a private boat or joining an organized tour. Furthermore, it’s a natural reserve to protect the giant tortoises living on the island, some of which are said to be centenary.
Only the old prison, a hotel and some elegant cottages are present on the atoll which becomes smaller at high tide. As soon as tourists sail back to Stone Town, Prison Island is again a remote and secluded islet returning to its natural life marked by the slow movements of the giant tortoises and the tides alternating.
