Journey through the Christmas cribs of Italy
If a crib map could be traced, Italy would be a starry sky spangled with a multitude of light spots showing more or less famous places. In fact, a great number of small villages and big cities from North to South, eastwards and westwards do not give up preparing cribs of all kinds.
Apart from one’s opinion and beliefs, a visit to a Christmas crib could be the occasion to know places and realities that maybe couldn’t be visited otherwise. Following the virtual crib net of sites and itineraries, it will be possible to discover aspects and characters, from which local traditions draw inspiration for crib setting up.
For instance, at Jesolo near Venice, the sea and sand represent the basic elements for the artistic statues of the Sand Nativity, opened till 31st Jan. 2012. The famous wide beaches of thin sand, so crowded in summer, are now empty and invite to long walks on the quiet wave-washed strands. Valsesia’s gastronomy and artifacts can be discovered visiting Cellio and the so-called Crib Valley, in the province of Vercelli in Piedmont till 8th Jan.2012.
In central Italy a great show of more than 500 cribs can be visited at Camaiore in Tuscany till 28th Feb. 2012. In the crib tour the two greatest islands of Sicily and Sardinia can be included, too. Cribs made of both conventional and unusual materials such as pasta, sugar and bottles are shown till 8th Jan. 2012 at Castelmola, in the province of Messina, Sicily.
Dough is instead the raw material of Olmedo’s crib in the province of Sassari, Sardinia, till 6th Jan. 2012. These are just a few of the numerous Christmas cribs around Italy, confirming once again its great variety, which combines popular traditions with the landscape and culture of every single region.
