Parks in the city: the Ticinello
Ancient views at the Ticinello Park, which takes its name from the canal built in 1152 for defensive reasons, most likely originated from the river Ticinum. The park extends for 1 square km in the southern suburb of Milan. All in all, it might seem a small park, but it’s the fourth one as for extension among Milan parks.
The Ticinello Park has been recently created, after a long series of troubled events that saved the green area from overbuilding and speculation. In addition to its naturalistic importance, the Ticinello Park brings back to the rural and peasant aspect of the metropolis that, after all, had featured Milan in most of its districts until some decades ago.
Inside the park, imposing trees, vast cultivated fields and marshes offer a suitable habitat to owls, peaks, swallows, storks, herons, frogs and fireflies, just to mention some of the species living or migrating there.
Comfortable paths and walkways invite people to take a relaxing walk in the green, while the fronds of the trees sway, filling the almost complete silence with their sound.
Facing with countless difficulties, a farm survives in the park, carrying on agricultural activities and hosting cultural events. In its premises a small museum area has been recently settled, yet to be enhanced. It gives visitors an idea of how local and Lombard farmers lived until a few decades ago.
The Ticinello Park along with its ancient farmhouse is a unique reality a few steps from the underground station. From there you can take the tube and reach the centre of Milan in just ten minutes. So close and yet so far away from the fashion district and the typical hit-and-run tourism of the city.
