The Nebra disk, from the mists of time to nowadays
Maybe no other archeological find discovered up to now has aroused so much controversy such as the Nebra disk, which was found near the homonymous German town on Mittelberg hill in 1999. Its long historical journey up to the present time could not end in a more troubled way. The disk was discovered by two illegal treasure hunters in an area of great archeological and astronomical interest. Then, it was illegally sold several times until Swiss authorities came into its possession and the disk could return back to the place where it belonged, and precisely to the state museum for prehistory in Halle, only a few km from Nebra.
The disk, with a 32-cm diameter and 2 kg weight, is dated to the Bronze Age, c. 1700 – 2100 BC and represents the first astronomical instrument in history so far known, a sort of portable solar and lunar calendar with a night sky map. At first, the Nebra disk was even supposed to be a forgery, but when its authenticity was proved, questions aroused about the artifact use and interpretation of the gold leaf representations of the Sun, the Moon, the horizons and the Pleiades.
Hypothesis about the reason why such an instrument was created range from astronomical measurements necessary for agricultural purposes to its witness message to posterity of a solar eclipse, which was likely to be happened around 1600 BC. Its representation on the bronze disk would correspond to the vision from Mittelberg at that time, reproduced by computer simulation. The functions of an adorning shield as well as a cult symbol have also been considered.
Surely, the ancient local people, who buried the Nebra disk about 3600 years ago could not imagine the future events in which it would be involved, including the legal steps for German copyright law infringement against the publishing houses Piper and Heyne and the city of Querfurt, near Nebra, since they used the symbol of the disk to realize book covers and souvenirs without authorization.
